The Qur’an is the sacred text of Islam, consisting of divine revelations to the Prophet Muhammad in Arabic. Over the first century and a half of Islam, the manuscript’s form evolved to match the dignity and splendor of this divine revelation. Although oral tradition initially took precedence over written manuscripts, the 114 suras (or chapters) of the Qur’an were eventually compiled into a textual format after the death of Muhammad. Scholars still debate the exact timing of this compilation.
